“Mercy Literacy Week” in Africa marks a new milestone for leaders and supporters of African Orphan Educational Foundation [AOEF].
Honoring the impact Mercy’s Magnificent Dreams has had on children in Africa, “Mercy Literacy Week” will be declared by local government officials as the storybook is distributed to students in 10 schools in a district outside of Kampala, Uganda.
The story and coloring book was developed to advance literacy among young learners in regions where millions are deprived of an education. Many students inspired by Mercy come from humble homes without running water or electricity. This English language literacy tool fosters learning and literacy while encouraging its young readers to dream BIG!
“Mercy Literacy Week” represents many firsts for Mercy’s Magnificent Dreams. AOEF VP & Director of Leadership Development Jimmy Glenos notes, “while the book has reached hundreds of children in Africa over the past 3 years, this is the first time Mercy will be printed on African soil.” This also marks the first time Mercy will be mass distributed to children across 10 schools in one district. Mercy’s storyline follows schoolchildren in Africa who are encouraged by their teacher to form pictures in their minds – because “if they can SEE it, they can BE it!” Characters Mercy and Collin imagine promising futures that will inspire thousands of young readers to envision the exciting possibilities ahead.
When AOEF published Mercy’s Magnificent Dreams, award-winning and internationally acclaimed fine artist George Kizito Mubanda jumped at the chance to champion the project. George witnessed the positive impact on children he read to in after school programs and in leper colonies. This experience became the driving force for his deepening involvement and efforts to expand distribution of Mercy’s Magnificent Dreams in Uganda,
